Love and Other Disasters
Year:
2006
Country:
UK
Director:
Alek Keshishian
Starring:
Brittany Murphy, Matthew Rhys, Santiago Cabrera, Michael Lerner, Dawn French, Gwyneth Paltrow
Synopsis:
A British fashion expert has trouble finding love, mainly because all the men she really cares about in her life are gay in this homage to 'Breakfast at Tiffany's.'
Quick review:
As you will see in this film, in the book 'Breakfast at Tiffany's,' the male character, Fred, is gay. What else would you expect from Truman Capote? Of course, Hollywood changed that. So 'Love and Other Disasters' pays homage to Capote's work with this film. Jacks is a young and beautiful woman working in the fashion industry. She keeps straight men at arm's length because of fear of being hurt, so her only close relationships with the opposite sex tend to be with gay men. For sex, she still sleeps with her ex-boyfriend, whom she doesn't like very much. At a shoot her star photographer brings along his latest boy toy, and he's hot, Latin and looks great in tight jeans. After getting to know him a bit, she tries to fix him up with her gay best buddy, who is having trouble moving on from a chance encounter with a beautiful man. This film is charming and throws in a few surprises with plenty of good looking men to admire. Just when you roll your eyes at the typical romantic-comedy cliche (rushing to the airport to profess your undying love just before the object of your affection boards the plane), it throws you a curve. It also has a strong statement about the true nature of love. Still, it's a romantic comedy so it's not too hard to guess how things will end.
