Synopsis: A woman named Sappho travels to the Greek island of Lesbos with her newlywed husband. Take a guess what happens next.
Quick review: This film is unique in a couple of regards. First, it's from the Ukraine and the first LGBT film I've added to this site from that nation. Second, it's a bisexual love story, but unlike nearly all of the bisexual films I've seen, it features two women with a man on the side. Considering the straight man's cliche fantasy, you would think there would be more. Sappho is a young, rich American bride who is bored with life. She's very hard to like, because she's a spoiled brat who treats others poorly. Her husband comes from a good family, but they have fallen on hard times. So, they are living off her fortune while he tries to make it as a painter. They decide to spend the summer on the Greek island of Lesbos, where the great poet Sappho changed the meaning of Lesbian. Sappho, the 1920s rich young woman, soon meets Helene, who introduces her to the famed Greek poet whose works were nearly all destroyed because they talked about loving both men and women. The modern Sappho, who is a bit crazy, soon believes she's the poet reincarnated. And after first resisting Helene's sexual interest, she soon gives in. But having sex with a woman on the beach of Lesbos isn't enough. Soon she's trying to set Helene up with her husband. Both of them are interested in the other and we soon have Sappho now upset over that. Like I said, she's a hard character to like. The film is beautifully shot and as a history major I loved getting background on Sappho the poet. Still, it's hard to recommend because the characters are so unlovable.
