Love on the Side
Year:
2004
Country:
USA
Director:
Vic Sarin
Starring:
Marla Sokoloff, Barry Watson, Jennifer Tilly, Dave Thomas
Synopsis:
A waitress/owner of a small-town diner has her dreams of the town hunk falling for her dashed when a new woman arrives. That is, until she discovers the woman is a lesbian.
Quick review:
Eve is a pretty young woman with self-esteem issues. She, as most of America, has a few too many pounds but what is really hurting her self-love is that the man she has been in love with since childhood, Jeff, thinks of her as nothing more than a little sister, when he thinks of her at all. In walks Linda to upset everything and to force some changes. Linda is everything Eve is not, tall, super model looks, blond, sophisticated, and oh yes, a lesbian. Jeff and Eve's brother both fight over Linda's attention (who keeps her sexual orientation secret because of a negative experience coming out in a small town). But it becomes obvious that Linda only has eyes for Eve. After a night of heavy drinking, the two women end up making out. The ensuing confusion turns Eve's world around. Does she choose Jeff (who becomes interested once he realizes there's a rival), or Linda? Does she choose art school, or staying at the diner? Does she let go of her fears and embrace her hopes, or keep finding excuses to hold on to them? This is a fun film, though everything wraps up a little too neatly at the end. And Jeff's conversion from barely noticing her to I-can't-live-without-you suitor is a bit shocking to watch.
