Synopsis: This documentary puts into context one of the most misunderstood and ground-breaking gay plays/movies of all time, the "Boys in the Band."
Quick review: Before anyone watches "Boys in the Band" they should see this documentary. It definitely helps put the movie in context and gives the viewer a greater appreciation. Mart Crowley's play debuted in January of 1968, about 18 months before the Stonewall riots. It doesn't take too big a jump in logic to see how the play might have helped bring about (in part) the riots. This excellent documentary does a very good job of explaining gay life in 1967 (hidden in the shadows). In that context, seeing a bunch of self-hating gay men is understandable. When the play made its debut it was a smash hit and became the talk of Broadway, mainly because no one had ever done a play where homosexuality was the main topic. The closing line of the play, that we're gay and there's nothing we can do to change it, so we might as well accept it, was a theme many adopted. The curse of the play is that while it may have helped some people come out and accept themselves, once the Stonewall riots happened it was out-of-date. Gay men were out and proud and the last thing they wanted was to see a play or movie (which was out right after Stonewall) about a bunch of self-hating gays who were terrified of coming out. After this documentary, you are left with the feeling that the Boys in the Band was a great tragedy. For such a ground-breaking work, it deserved a better fate. And when you see what happened to the cast (many died from AIDS), the tragedy keeps piling on. Anyone interested in gay history or what brought about the start of the gay liberation movement should see this film.
