Ang Lalake sa Parola (The Man in the Lighthouse)

Year: 2007
Country: Philippines
Director: Joselito Altarejos
Starring: Harry Laurel, Justin De Leon, Jennifer Lee
Synopsis: A gay man from Manila visits the countryside and meets the caretaker of a lighthouse, Matteo. He's immediately attracted despite the fact that Matteo has a steady girlfriend. The two begin a friendship with the hope of something more.
Quick review: Matteo is a quiet young man living in the country. He knows he's poorly educated, but he does have a couple of things going for him. He beautiful, he has some artistic talent and he has a beautiful girlfriend who loves to have sex. It appears he's on the path to marriage, but then the local legend intervenes. The fable states that men in the area meet the fairy of the lighthouse and are forever changed, many times never marrying. Since Matteo is the caretaker of the lighthouse, he was bound to meet this fairy. Enter Jerome, a gay man from Manila who is in the area looking for a place for his aunt to buy. He has a good job, makes good money and is immediately attracted to Matteo. They start a friendship and many naked scenes later, a relationship begins. But these two aren't a good match. Matteo refuses to call himself gay and Jerome is leader of the gay parade. If you like looking at beautiful, naked Filipino men, there's a lot to like in this movie. However, the story introduces characters and themes, then abandons them. There's the local drag queen early in the film, who soon disappears. There is a storyline about Matteo's father that seeks some closure and it never comes. There's also a confusing dialogue with an old man cleaning graves and remembering his past. All that detracts from the rest of the film.
