Quick review:
This is the second gay film from Peru that I've seen (Don't Tell Anyone is the other) and you notice some similarities right away. Being gay is still not acceptable in Peru. In gay director Javier Fuentes-León's "Undertow," he explores that theme with a traditional love triangle. Miguel has a wife who is about to give birth to their first child. He also has a gay lover who he never is seen in public with (since Santiago is open about his sexual orientation). Life for Santiago is hard. The man he loves will only speak to him when they're alone, and then he's rushing back to his wife. Everyone in this small town by the sea avoids him. He keeps hoping that Miguel will find the courage to accept who he is and then they can be together, but is beginning to realize that with a child coming, that is unlikely to happen. Slowly, Santiago -- a painter -- is moving to the decision to leave. He doesn't get the chance, dying a third of the way through the film. He returns as a ghost who only Miguel can see, hear and touch. It gives Miguel a chance to see the life he might have had if he had been open about his love, as the two can now stroll down the main street holding hands. He decides that he doesn't want Santiago to move on to the next life, that he wants to keep him there as a ghost for his own selfish reasons. The story is eventually about Miguel deciding between accepting who he is and willing to face the condemnation that he has long feared to keep a promise to the man he loved and continuing to live in secret. The film features some of the best South American actors who took some risk to their careers by playing gay. It's a terrific film and has won numerous awards.
