When Night is Falling

Year: 1994
Country: Canada
Director: Patricia Rozema
Starring: Pascale Bussières, Rachael Crawford, Henry Czerny
Synopsis: Opposites attract is the very good lesbian romance film "When Night is Falling." A reserved woman who works at a Christian school and a brash circus performer fall for each other.
Quick review: Camille is a mythology teacher at a small Christian college in Canada, who is having a not-so-secret romance with the theology teacher, Martin. The clergy of the school informs them he's leaving and gives a not-so-subtle hint that if they were to get married, the college would likely consider both of them for the joint-job. Martin's excited, but it's hard to get a read on the very reserved Camille. While doing laundry, Camille meets Petra, pretty much her polar opposite. Petra is not at all reserved, and in face, is borderline stalker in her pursuit of Camille. She performs at an odd traveling circus and dresses in outlandish clothes. Slowly, the two start a romance that will force confronting the church's concerns of homosexuality and also facing Martin. The love scenes, directed by a woman, are touching. This is an excellent film and is worthy of the designation "classic."
