Synopsis: After the janitor inherits a drag/leather bar in small town America he faces a couple of problems: First, the local church leader is leading a boycott of the bar; second there's a new man in town who is chasing after him.
Quick review: "Theft" is a low-budget comedy filled with stereotypical characters that still can pull off a couple of surprises and is better than many others that are made on a shoe-string budget. Our hero is Guy, who is the janitor at the Golden Door, the only gay bar in Liberty Hills, Texas. He never dreamed he'd end up there, but he fell and love and that's where he was when his heart was broken and his man left him. Broke, he's trying to start again and hopes to leave the town and pursue art history. But the owner of the Golden Door dies, and leaves the club to Guy because its star drag queen doesn't want it. As Guy deals with all this, the town's church leader, Sister Susanna, has decided to use the gay club to further her own ambitions, which includes her own television network. So she leads a boycott that kills business just as Guy is taking over. There's also a new man in town who is not shy about his interest in Guy, but he's an struggling artist, just the type Guy wants to avoid. When the local church burns down, Guy is the prime suspect because of the boycott. The film has its charms, but a character like Sister Susanna is so over-the-top that it's hard to love it. You keep looking for some complexity in the characters and it's just not there. There are a number of extended drag queen show scenes in this film, it may make up a quarter of the movie. So if you enjoy those, you might really like this film. Also, I loved the DVD menu clip, very creative even if it went on a little too long.
