Gypsy Boys

Year: 1999
Country: USA
Director: Brian Shepp
Starring: Alberto Rosas, Zeke Wheeler, Jud Parker, Adam Gavzner, Tom McCann
Synopsis: A group of gay men roam from club to party to club over three nights looking for something, they just not sure what it is in this honest comedy.
Quick review: There are parts of "Gypsy Boys" that all gay men should find offensive, except we know them to be true. There's the two queens who stand near the entrance of every club degrading everyone who walks by, but they always seem to be alone themselves. There's the fact that some gay men just don't seem able to settle down, wanting to chase every hot guy they see while maintaining their friends with benefits. And then there are the guys with great imagination who lack the courage to to put themselves out there. All are represented in this film. The heart of the story that is set in San Francisco's Castro District involves two couples, Manny and his love for Aaron and Steve and his love for Blair. If you see this, and you've seen Trick, you're going to swear that the Manny character is played by one of the leads of Trick, John Paul Pitoc. I was, until I got to the credits and saw it was Alberto Rosas. I'm still not sure it's the same person using two names. Anyway, Manny is tired of the games and ready to settle down and madly in love with Aaron. But Aaron is in love with Noel, even though it's obvious he's still got a crush on Manny. Steve and Blair's relationship is similar in that Steve wants to settle down with Blair, but Blair is chasing every guy he can. They continue to have sex, to practice. But Blair is not ready to be exclusive. The journey we take is Manny's and Steve's as they learn to let go and open themselves up to someone else. There are plenty of other side plots in this ensemble piece. Kevin, friend to Steve and Blair, is the one who has the active imagination but lacks courage. And there's David, who has just thrown his boyfriend of 5 years out and is starting anew. I like the honesty of the film, holding up a mirror to expose all the worst parts of gay life. Not so crazy about Kevin's fantasy life being mixed in, feels kind of out of place when you're dealing with some serious subjects. I could not find a trailer for this film.
