Quick review:
There are directors who have such a unique style that you know immediately that you're watching one of their films. If you've seen "Colma: The Musical" then you will instantly recognize that "Fruit Fly" was done by the same director, even if you can't recall H.P. Mendoza's name. The music is an obvious giveaway. He has his own style, one that attempts to mimmic Broadway composing great Stephen Sondheim in complexity. The story of his films is usually secondary to the music. And he throws in some special effects that seem out of place just because he can. The story in "Fruit Fly" is minimal. A young woman named Bethesda grew up in Maryland with adoptive parents but has been living in the Philippines while she searched for the identity of her actual parents returns to the U.S. to live in San Francisco. She's moved into an artists commune and hopes to do a revival of her one-woman show at a local theater. She instantly becomes best friends with the gay man who sleeps on the couch, Windham, and only later learns she has become a "fag hag." There's a lesbian couple who also live in the house, one of whom is a fan of Bethesda's YouTube videos. The film has some good moments that can bring a laugh or a smile to your face, but it's hard to beat the feeling that it's all pointless. The story is not compelling, and the music is not good enough. That said, I do admire a director who is out there taking risks and developing his own style. This is just his second film and I suspect that as he hones his craft he will direct a film that I'm going to love.
