Intentions

Year: 2004
Country: USA
Director: Luane Beck
Starring: Dierdre Kotch, Katherine Lee, Tom Darci
Synopsis: An acting student and her teacher/director become romantically involved while working on a new production at their college. The professor has a husband and two children, and the student has a crazy ex, but the show must go on.
Quick review: Renee loves to direct and there's a competition coming and she has an edgy play that could do well, provided she find just the right actress for the lead role. Eve is a student with acting ability, but her busy schedule and an unsympathetic girlfriend has convinced her she doesn't have the time for the play. Still, there's a part of Eve that loves acting and being asked to audition by Professor Renee Higgins is a huge ego boost. Of course she ends up in the play with the lead role. But as the two women begin working together, chemistry happens and it's not long before Eve, who has dumped her girlfriend, is making a move. Problem is that Renee is married and has two daughters and by all appearances, isn't gay. The kiss causes awkward moments as they try to work together on the play. But once the play is performed, the romance and its aftermath begin. My biggest problem with this film is the lightning speed Renee goes from not talking to Eve any more than she had to, to getting naked and hopping in bed with her. That major moment is given little attention so that we can get to the aftermath quickly. There, we get a lot of melodrama, most of it forced. I would like to have seen more romance, more of why these two women fell for one another and a little less of the crazy ex-girlfriend. Also would have liked to climb inside Renee's a head a bit more, trying to understand what she was going through choosing between her husband, her lesbian lover, her two daughters. And the ending is disappointing, with almost nothing settled.
