Ice Blues

Year: 2008
Country: USA
Director: Ron Oliver
Starring: Chad Allen, Sebastian Spence, Daryl Shuttleworth, Adrian Holmes
Synopsis: The fourth film in the Donald Strachey Mystery collection has Don's partner, Tim, in trouble after he receives $3 million from an anonymous source. When the lawyer who handled the deal is murdered, it's up to Don to save his boyfriend and solve the case.
Quick review: This Donald Strachey mystery differs from the first three of the film series. Each of those, "Third Man Out," "Shock to the System" and "On The Other Hand, Death," dealt with a gay issue as one of the plot lines. In the first, is was someone outing closeted gay politicians. In the second, it was the ex-gay organizations. In the third, a father trying to accept his gay son and a conservative community accepting two lesbians living among them. This film, however, doesn't really have a gay subplot. Chad Allen still portrays Donald Strachey, who is gay. And his partner, Timothy, steps it up in this film and is a major part of the story. But the subject is child porn and sleazeball lawyers, something the straight world has to deal with as well. I enjoyed the gay subplots, but it's also nice to see Don and Tim just being a gay couple and dealing with the occasional murder that comes into their lives. Tim, an aide for a powerful state senator in New York, is desperately trying to raise money to save a program that helps teen runaways. A lawyer he doesn't know shows up and offers him $3 million from an anonymous source. The lawyer is soon dead, and Tim receives a package with $3 million in it. He hires Don to figure out where the money came from. Is this original? No. But it's still fun. The relationship between Don and his partner is what makes this series worth seeing, even if you know all the twists and turns long before they arrive.
