The New Twenty

Quick review: One of my favorite straight films is "Love Actually," an ensemble film with many different plots. So you would think I'd embrace "The New Twenty," which focuses on five college friends all looking for a new direction seven years after they graduated. But this film is a bit of a downer, which probably means it is more like real life. The two gay men are Tony and Ben, and they are complete opposites. Ben sits at home bored, playing video games, and surfing the Internet hoping for a hookup. He's overweight, but smart. Still, he has trouble finding the love and acceptance he desperately wants. Tony goes out often but is ready to settle down. He meets a guy in the sauna at his gym, and they start a relationship. But when Tony finds out his potential boyfriend is HIV positive, he's not sure how to handle it. Most of the film revolves around the straight characters, and while there is considerable bedroom action for the breeders, not so much for the fabulous people. Andrew and Julie decide to get married, but Andrew is a bit jealous that Julie makes more money than he does. He decides to start his own business, with the help of a creepy venture capitalist. The fifth friend is Felix, who is as addicted to drugs as he is to Julie. And he's not sure he can give either of them up. The film is well made, the acting is good, it's not so predictable that you can write it five minutes into the screening. Still, it's hard to love.
