Cannibal

Year: 2005
Country: Germany
Director: Marian Dora
Starring: Carsten Frank, Tobias Sickert, Victor Brandl
Synopsis: In 2001 a German man advertised on the Internet seeking a man to kill and then devour. Armin Meiwes found his meat, and did just what he advertised. This film depicts that actual event in graphic detail.
Quick review: First, this is a hard film to watch. If you don't turn away at points or shut your eyes, I worry about you. There are scenes in this film that no one should see. Such as castration, cannibalism, and the slow and methodical butchering of another human being. I certainly turned away and fast forwarded my way through it. And I'll never watch this again. This film seems to be an accurate portrayal of the Armin Meiwes case. He advertised on the web seeking someone who was willing to die, then become meat that his killer would eat. For the first third of the film, there is no dialogue as The Man goes through some near misses, meeting people who later decide they don't want to die or be eaten. Finally, he finds one man who is determined to go through with it. The next third is them building a connection and having sex. The final third is the part best missed. From what I've read of the Meiwes' case, this film sounds like it they took great care for accuracy. Since Meiwes videotaped the actual event, police know what took place. That wanting to be accurate probably led them showing everything, from the castration to the butchering. What they don't show is the aftermath, how Meiwes was found out and arrested. That, I would have like to have seen after having to sit through that final third of the film. This film is certainly not for everyone.
