Not Angels, But Angels
Year:
1994
Country:
CzechRepublic
Director:
Wiktor Grodecki
Starring:
About a dozen male prostitutes
Synopsis:
About a dozen male prostitutes that work the train station and clubs of Prague talk about their lives and their trade in this documentary film. The boys interviewed are 14 to 19 years old.
Quick review:
The title of this film would seem to be a contradiction, but it actually fits. The dozen or so boys interviewed for this film are contradictions. Some of them are straight, but they have gay sex. They know about AIDS and fear catching it, but they engage in unsafe sexual practices. On the one hand life has made them mature beyond their years, including some of them who have fathered children, and on the other they are immature and ignorant. The viewer learns a lot about buying boys in Prague. First, there's not a 20-year-old to be seen. Second, the boys usually sell themselves for 1,000 to 1,500 crowns (about $60 to $90). Third, based on these interviews, about half are straight. But for all those insights, the film is frustrating because of what it doesn't tell. How did these boys end up selling their bodies at the train station? Many mention coming from bad situations at home, but they never say exactly what was bad. Were they beaten? Were they thrown out because they were gay? Or did mom and dad just expect them to do homework and chores? We don't find that out. If you're interested in what the boys who sell themselves are really thinking, then watch this film. Otherwise, not sure watching 90 minutes of people being interviewed will be very entertaining.
