Agnes und seine Brüder (Agnes and His Brothers)

Year: 2004
Country: Germany
Director: Oskar Roehler
Starring: Herbert Knaup, Martin Weiß, Moritz Bleibtreu
Synopsis: Three brothers, one a transexual, try to deal with their messed-up lives and try to understand how their relationship with their father might explain why everything has gone so wrong.
Quick review: This film is not for everyone. It looks at relationships and how they can go bad, so if you enjoy upbeat films, this one is not for you. Agnes, the transgender woman, is probably the most normal of the bunch. This film has little to do with her own self journey and the transgender aspect is secondary. Her oldest brother is Werner, a Green Party politician who is in the news lately for pushing through a big bill. While that success is taking place, his family life is falling apart. His wife no longer seems interested in him and his oldest son seems intent on ruining him. Middle brother Hans-Jörg is just creepy. He works in a library of what I must assume is a school for fashion models. Nearly all the women are tall, skinny and gorgeous. For a sex addict like him, it's probably the wrong place to be. Agnes has her own problems. She's never gotten over the love of her life, but he is gay and their relationship came while she was still a man. Her current man is pushing her away. Why all three have messed up relationships might have something to do with their father. There are hints that the father is gay. But outside of some brief comments, we don't learn what their father did that was so terrible. I do not enjoy these kind of relationship movies and did not like this one. If you do enjoy complicated and messed up relationships, this might be the film for you.
