Mala Noche (Bad Night)

Year: 1985
Country: USA
Director: Gus Van Sant
Starring: Tim Streeter, Doug Cooeyate, Ray Monge, Nyla McCarthy
Synopsis: In director Gus Van Sant's first film, a young man develops a crush on an illegal immigrant that frequents his convenience store and engages in a lot of stupid ideas in an effort to win the boy's heart.
Quick review: I thought I had reviewed this already, because I have seen it. But a reader asked why it was listed, and I couldn't find it. So I happily watched this again. The first thing you notice is that this is definitely a Gus Van Sant film. You recognize so many of the techniques the gay director would use in his later, and better known, works. There's the slow pacing; there's the Pacific Northwest; there are some amazing landscape shots. And above all, there is quirky. Van Sant makes films in a unique way and tells interesting stories, usually about the people on the low side of society's scale. Here was have a poor white guy, Walt, who in his 20s or early 30s and works in a convenience store. Most of his customers are illegal immigrants, so he has picked up some Spanish. Enter Johnny, who Walt falls for instantly. He pursues him aggressively, and Johnny is eager to lead him on in exchange for non-sexual favors. But he is also not gay and not interested in Walt. Johnny insists that they are never alone together, and his buddy Roberto is usually forced to act as chaperone. Johnny won't even have sex with Walt for money, something Roberto has no problem doing. So the film is an odd love triangle. While Walt pursues Johnny, he actually develops a relationship with Roberto. And Roberto enjoys the sex, but only by his rules (only at night, and it's all about his penis). It's a messed up world, but it's as messy and complicated as life. This film is worth checking out simply because it's the first one done by one of the best gay directors of all time. And when you do, you'll recognize a lot of Gus Van Sant in it.
