Simon

Year: 2004
Country: Netherlands
Director: Eddy Terstall
Starring: Cees Geel, Marcel Hensema, Rifka Lodeizen
Synopsis: An uptight gay man and a wild and crazy straight man become best friends, have a falling out, and then reunite just after one of them learns they will soon be dying of cancer.
Quick review: This is a touching film worth checking out. Camiel is the gay man who was nearly run over by a wild-driving Simon. He takes him to the hospital and soon the two begin an unlikely friendship. Simon helps Camiel loosen up and, well, Simon never calms down. There are lots of parties and sex, most of it straight. Then to help Simon spend his money (he deals drugs and doesn't report the income) they all head off to Thailand. There, they have a falling out. Years later Simon nearly runs over Camiel again. Both have had life changes, as Camiel has met his partner and the two are planning a life together and Simon has learned he has cancer and will likely die. In the months that follow the two renew their bonds and at the end, it is Camiel who has become Simon's closest friend. The film touches on many issues, including gay marriage and euthanasia, but it's mostly about the relationship between these two unlikely friends. One aspect I liked about this film was the portrayal of Camiel's relationship with his partner. It felt real, which you don't often see in films that are told mostly from the straight person's point of view.
