Three young men break out of a detention center and head to Madrid, where one of them hopes to renew his affair with a Basque terrorist in this Spanish drama.
Quick review:
You have to like any movie that starts out with a shower scene (well, after the opening credits). And you do get a decent amount of full frontal in this drama, if you like that kind of thing. Xabi and Joel plan a daring breakout of a youth detention facility. Driss is an Arab who is about to be deported, so when he sees an opportunity for escape, he takes it. The three of them head to Madrid where Xabi hopes to rekindle his romance with an older man, Iñaki. Only the Basque terrorist has left his old apartment and is not taking Xabi's calls. Xabi decides he needs to prove himself to his mentor by committing his own terrorist act. And to help finance it, he heads to the local mall where a former cop picks him up for a night of passion. While Xabi is stealing a gun and money from the ex-cop, Joel is moving in with a woman the trio met as they headed toward Madrid. And Driss hooks up with her friend. But Xabi is the heart of this twisted love story. He is willing to do anything to get Iñaki back, and the ex-cop he hooked up with seems willing to do anything to save him. It's an entertaining film and much more nuanced in its portrayal of terrorists than I'm guessing you would see in a U.S. film. But Spain has been dealing with Basque separatists for a long time now. It's hardly a flattering portrayal, but it shows how someone can be conned into committing terrible acts.
