Quick review: I really didn't need to see this film to know I would love it. Part of that is knowing yourself, and it's only fair that I disclose all my biases. I love historical films, especially if they are based on a true story. I love films about social crusaders who pursue civil rights for all. I'm a big fan of people who fight for equal rights for gay men and lesbians. I love political stories and I have a soft spot for martyrs. So, yes, if you were to try to draw up the perfect film to get a great review on Outfilms.com, it would be Milk. I still have the documentary on Milk as my all-time favorite documentary and one of my top 10 gay films. This film will be going up on the list as well. It pushes all my buttons, so of course I loved it. There is terrific, Oscar-worthy acting from a great cast. A well-made film from one of the top gay directors in the world. And a story that still can move me to tears. And most importantly, it is faithful to the life of Harvey Milk. It opens as he's making an audio tape, to be played in case of his death by assassination, which the real Harvey Milk made before he was gunned down. It then uses that as a vehicle to look back on Milk's life, beginning with his picking up his life's love in a New York subway station. They both decide to start over in San Francisco, where both men soon become politically active. No part of Milk's life is ignored, from the trouble with his lovers, to his long, long losing streak in political races to his crusade for gay rights and fighting the bigotry of Anita Bryant. It's an inspiring film, reminding all gay people that the best way to end discrimination and bigotry is to come out of the closet and quit hiding who we are, something modern gay rights leaders seem to have forgotten. And, yes, it ends with terrible sadness. I suspect I wasn't the only person tearing up. Sean Penn deserve the Oscar hype for his portrayal of Milk, but there are other great performances here, including James Franco, Diego Luna, Emile Hirsch and even Josh Brolin as Dan White. I recognize my own biases, but even so I'd say this ranks up there as one of the best gay films ever made.
