Curiosity of Chance, The

Year: 2006
Country: USA
Director: Russell P. Marleau
Starring: Tad Hilgenbrinck, Chris Mulkey, Brett Chukerman, Aldevina da Silva, Pieter Van Nieuwenhuyze
Synopsis: An American gay teen in Europe tries to fit in at his new American overseas school while he flirts with his hunky next door neighbor.
Quick review: Chance knows that he's not going to fit in at his new school, which is for the children of military service members stationed in Europe. It only takes a few seconds after meeting Chance before you are pretty certain he's gay. And this film is set in the 1980s, when most gay teens did a better job of hiding it. Not Chance. His father is a military man trying to raise his family alone, who has a very difficult time relating to his son. And now there is the joy of starting at a new school, overseas, cut off from any support network other than his very bright younger sister. So Chance decides to give his fellow students something else to talk about on his first day, arriving in a top hat and tie. And yes, it makes him a target of a bully. But he also eventually finds a couple of friends and spies his gorgeous neighbor, Levi. There are other moments of fun, including Chance's experimentation with being a drag performer. Unlike most teen coming-of-age films set in the 1980s, this one doesn't have Chance driving by angst trying to come to terms with being gay. He's already there, and that is so refreshing. Instead, we have Chance trying to come to terms with life. The bully is a bit cliche and one dimensional, but overall the film has a fun story, cute boys, and great soundtrack.
