Markova

Synopsis: A gay Filipino man is forced to become a sex slave for Japanese soldiers after they invade his country. The film is based on a true story.
Quick review: I readily admit I have a bias toward films that are based on true events. This is an interesting story of Walter Dempster Jr., alias Markova, is approached by a reporter to tell his life's story. He's an elderly man living at a home for old queens in Manilla. Many people know of comfort girls, women who were forced to have sex with soldiers from invading armies. They were often shunned by the local population, who felt they betrayed their nation. Well, throw in being gay to that social stigma. Markova was a beautiful young man who liked to dress as a woman when the Japanese arrived in the Philippines. A Japanese leader saw him dressed as a woman and immediately took interest. Soon, the soldier and Markova started a relationship. The film is at its best when it deals with the nuances of the relationship. His Japanese lover treats him with nothing but kindness and love. Markova struggles between his love of country and love for this man. But those internal struggles are much harder as his neighbors shun him. He also tells the story of his close friends, who were also comfort gays and cross dressers. Most of them had it even worse than he did. Knowing this film is based on a true story really helps with the impact.
