Strawberry & Chocolate

Year: 1993
Country: Cuba
Director: Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Juan Carlos Tabío
Starring: Jorge Perugorria, Vladimir Cruz, Marta Ibarra
Synopsis: Global politics mix in with the traditional gay boy falls for the straight boy plot in this rare Cuban gay film. The twist here is the seduction is more about the mind than the body.
Quick review: Very early on in this surprising film the viewer assumes he knows how this film will play out. A gay guy picks up a straight boy off the street. He's able to convince him to come back to his place where -- oops -- he just happens to spill something on his shirt. Well, the shirt must come off the sexy, buff straight boy so that it can be washed. It's at this point your eyes will roll and you will say to yourself, Like I haven't seen that 100 times before. But then this film veers off course, and goes places you don't expect. And that's one of the reasons why it was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 1995 Academy Awards. David is the sexy straight boy who is a college student and fully embraces the Communist revolution in Cuba (the film is set in 1979). Diego is the gay man who picks him up on the street. The seduction that takes place over the course of the rest of the film is more about challenging David's mind, and his ideals. At first, he continues a relationship with Diego because a friend at school suggests it as a way of spying on someone the state frowns upon. But as with any undercover operation, David is exposed to new ideas and ways of thinking through his friendship with Diego. And it forces him to reevaluate how he views the world. That's what makes this rare gay film from Cuba stand out.
