Bar Girls

Year: 1995
Country: USA
Director: Marita Giovanni
Starring: Nancy Allison Wolfe, Lisa Parker, Camila Griggs, Paula Sorge, Justine Slater
Synopsis: A group of lesbians pursue sex at a local Los Angeles bar in this romantic comedy. But what happens when love enters the picture? Can it survive the games lesbians play?
Quick review: This is a low-budget film based on sceenwriter's Lauren Hoffman's autobiographical play and shot in the L.A. bar, Girl Bar. This film proves that when it comes to sex, lesbians have a lot in common with the gay brothers. From the moment Loretta spots Rachel, she's taken with her. She bets a friend that she can take the new woman home that night. Immediately, the two friends prounce on the new blood at the bar. But Loretta develops a stronger attraction to Rachel than just sex. Could this be love? Maybe, but what it really is, is jealousy when a butch cop begins to pursue Rachel. Throw in plenty of jokes about lesbians and their exes, and you have the makings of a fun romantic comedy. The screenwriter and producer had to raise the funds themselves, so there are times the low budget shows. But it's original and quirky enough to forgive any shortcomings the lack of money caused.
