Girl From Rio, The

Synopsis: One of the films that may have contributed to the image of the man hating lesbian, this tale focuses an army of lesbians and the man who tries to stop their evil plans.
Quick review: I guess in 1969 lesbians couldn't be too picky about finding depictions of themselves and their lives on the big screen. Trouble is, most of those films were like this one: Made by a man who was more interested in exciting men than in understanding woman-woman love. Jess Franco, the director, had a reputation for films with lots of sex and violence. This film helped build that reputation. Sumitra has built an army of gorgeous women who run around in skimpy outfits on an island just off the coast of Brazil. She has a plan to take over the world from the men who run it. (Some would argue too bad she didn't succeed, considering the mess men have made of this world, but that's off subject). An American playboy has arrived from the U.S. and it seems everyone is out to get him. It's his job to stop the lesbians and save the world. There is lots of sex, including lesbian love, and lots of violence. But most lesbians will be offended by how they are depicted, not inspired. But at this time in history, films like these were the only kind movie studios would make.
