Quick review:
There were so few gay films in the United States during the 1970s that it is a pleasure to come across a foreign film this complex. Martin is a man in his late 20s/early 30s sent to jail for falling in love with a minor boy. Because of his crime, everyone knows that he is gay. Still, he endures prison, waiting for his day of release. While there he is asked to direct a play being put on by the prisoners. One of the stars of the play is the son of one of the guards, Thomas. Thomas is 18 and gorgeous and Martin is immediately attracted to him. It also appears Thomas is attracted to Martin. The two begin a secret affair that lasts until Martin is finally released from prison. They want to run away together and live happily ever after, but Thomas' father will have none of it. He sends his son off to a tough boarding school with the intent to beat the gay out of him. It's up to Martin to rescue him before the boy loses all hope of ever living a happy life. Considering the state of gay films in the 1970s, this is a very good film. It may have the pedophile stereotype, but Thomas is no victim here and Martin is not the old may preying on youth. It is Thomas who seduces Martin. And neither men behaves as the stereotypical wishy gay man. The film is a bit dark at times (highlighted by the fact it was shot in black and white), but it is a worthy part of any collection of historic gay films.
