Shock to the System

Year: 2006
Country: USA
Director: Ron Oliver
Starring: Chad Allen, Morgan Fairchild, Sebastian Spence, Michael Woods, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman
Synopsis: The second film adaptation of Richard Stevenson's novels about gay private investigator Donald Strachey. A mysterious client hires Donald but doesn't explain exactly why. When he turns up dead, Donald investigates.
Quick review: The first Donald Strachey mystery brought to film was 'Third Man Out.' Out actor Chad Allen plays Donald Strachey in both films (a gay man playing gay!). This film is better than the first. I confess to not having read any of Richard Stevenson's novels. But I'm starting to get a feel for his Strachey stories. The mystery seems to be a great excuse for exploring controversial subjects within the gay community. In the first, it was using outing closet cases as a form of political retribution, In this one it is examining ex-gay organizations. The film opens with Donald meeting with a new client, Paul Haig. The client seems very frightened and demands a secret meeting in an alley. He never tells Donald exactly why he's hiring him, because a speeding car down the alley scares him away. A day later Paul is found dead and suicide seems to be the likely cause. Having taken Paul's money and the assurances of Paul's mother that he wasn't the suicide type, Donald decides to investigate. Turns out the mother has had trouble accepting Paul's homosexuality and encouraged him to join an ex-gay group. She claimed he was making tremendous progress. In fact, he was the poster boy for the organization. This story takes many interesting turns, and not all of them are unexpected. For me, the best part were the revelations of Donald's past. He fell in love with another man while serving in the Army, and this case recalls those memories. Neither Strachey film is a grand mystery. In fact, the solutions seem to come out of no where. But the best aspects of these films are seeing a gay detective living his life with his partner and exploring controversial gay issues. Oh, and the full frontal nudity, gratuitous as it is, doesn't hurt either.
