Synopsis: This is the film adaptation of gay author Augusten Burrough's memoir of growing up the only sane person in a collection of oddballs, beginning with his mother. It features an all-star cast and terrific performances.
Quick review: Right in the middle of this outstanding film, Dr. Finch (Brian Cox) tells Augusten (Joseph Cross), Where would we be without out painful childhoods? No doubt Augusten would love to find out. The real Augusten Burroughs would go on to become a successful writer. But how he got there played a key role in that success. After watching this film, you'll wonder how he ever survived his childhood. His mother neglects them while pursuing her own writing career, knowing that success is bound to find her. His father drinks heavily and can't connect with either his wife or son. Oh, and they loathe each other. Augusten's mother, Deirdre (Annette Bening), admits that she has suicidal thoughts only after having sex with her husband. To save this dying marriage set in the 1970s, Deirdre brings in Dr. Finch, who claims to be some sort of counselor. At first, he seems legitimate, but soon you're beginning to wonder what paper mill produced his degree. The marriage of Augusten's parents dissolves and his father decides to make a clean break, refusing to have any contact with his son. Deirdre decides she needs to find herself, so she dumps Augusten on the ecclectic Finch family. The mother eats Kibbles, the oldest daughter asks the Bible to answer ever question that comes into her head (she points at a random page and then tries to dicode the answer from God), and the youngest is so proud that he can poop, which he does behind the Christmas trees that never come down. In the middle of this craziness, 14-year-old Augusten begins seeing his first love, the 35-year-old gay brother who hears voices and has been banished from the Finch home. And the family seems to approve of this relationship and even encourages it. The cookiness gives the film its edge, but the acting is top rate and the production by first-time director Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) matches the cast's performance. Next time you start thinking you had it rough as a child, rent this film. It will make you embrace your childhood torments and be thankful that they weren't worse.
