Quick review: Gay partners Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland wrote and directed this touching film. There are very few U.S.-based films that highlight the gay Latino community. The Day Laborers was probably the best until this one. Carlos lives with his great uncle after having been thrown out of his family's house after his father discovered he was visiting gay Web sites. His Tio accepts him and his lifestyle openly. The film opens at the quinceaera of Carlos' sister and he creates quite a scene just by showing up to give his little sister a flower and wish her a happy birthday. The film quickly turns focus to Magdalena, who is only a couple of months away from her 15th birthday and her quinceaera. But, she has a problem. She's pregnant despiite never having actual intercourse. It is one virgin birth that her preacher father just cannot accept and Magdalena soon leaves home and moves in with Carlos and Tio. Tio has his own problems. The house that he has lived in for more than 40 years sits on the back of a lot with the main house near Los Angele's Echo Park. A gay couple has just bought the property in the start of gentrification of the neighborhood. When the two men with a craving for Latin boys get a look at Carlos, they begin plotting to seduce the boy. Carlos falls for one of them, but not both. And when the other learns of the affair, the drama ensues. This film is filled with Latin culture and family issues that give it an edge rarely found in most mainstream gay films.
