Grand Sons (Petits fils, Les)

Year: 2004
Country: France
Director: Ilan Duran Cohen
Starring: Reine Ferrato, Guillaume Quatravaux, Jean-Philippe Sêt, Brice Cauvin, Samuel de Gunzburg
Synopsis: An elderly Jewish woman has a lot to deal with: Her gay grand son, his on again, off again boyfriend, the ashes of the young man's mother, a gay housekeeper and a second grand son she often has to babysit.
Quick review: Guillaume is a 24-year-old gay man who lives part time with his grandmother, the woman who raised him after his mother abandoned him. Their relationship is like many of people from generations so far apart who have been forced to spend a lot of time together. It's always on edge and seems like everything one person does annoys the other. But underneath that, there is love and appreciation. Rgine, the grandmother, is getting older and needs help around the house. She hires a young college student, Maxime, who grew up in the neighborhood to stop by a couple hours and give her a hand, especially since Guillaume only lives with her about half a month. The ashes of Guillaume's mother sit on the porch and no one is sure what to do with them. The mother had asked to have her ashes spread in Scotland, but Guillaume has little desire to see them through, believing his mother gone. It is Maxime who forces both of them to deal with their repressed emotions dealing with Guillaume's mother. This is a slow-moving, character-driving film. It's about love and what it takes to make a family. It treats homosexuality as just another part of life, with no judgments or condemnations. Guillaume's lover is free to come over and visit, stay the night, and the grandmother has no problem with that. This film is not for everyone (meaning Americans, mostly, who like their explosions and car chases). But it has more to say about acceptance and love than most gay films.
