Myra Breckinridge

Year: 1970
Country: USA
Director: Michael Sarne
Starring: Raquel Welch, Rex Reed, John Huston, Farrah Fawcett, Mae West, Roger Herren, Tom Selleck
Synopsis: This was an attempt to turn Gore Vidal's best-selling novel of a transgender woman who goes to Hollywood into a hit film.
Quick review: I sure hope Gore Vidal's novel makes more sense than this film, which is a jumbled mess. The film was branded with an X rating when it came out, and that is probably the only reason people went to see it. By today's standards, it would be PG-13. There's very little nudity, as much of it is suggested. The only reason for the X rating is that a hunky man is sodomized by a transgender woman. Big whoop. Rex Reed plays Myron Breckinridge, and Raquel Welch is Myra Breckinridge, the result of a Scandavian operation. For some reason, the two actors spend a lot of screen time together. Throw in aging sexpot Mae West, who was in her late 70s when this film was made. That doesn't stop her. She acts like she's still the hottest woman in the world and every man wants her. Truth be told, for her age she does look amazing. But women in their 70s aren't my thing. Anyway, back to the confused plot. Myra decides to go to Hollywood and join a school for actors run by her uncle. It's a money-making scheme, and Myra wants her cut of it. Uncle, of course, doesn't want to share. Now throw in a lot of beautiful people (look for a very young Tom Selleck and Farah Fawcett) and tons of jokes about sex, and you have what passes for a movie. It may be gutsy for its day, but unlike Mae West, it doesn't age well.
