Quick review: You have a choice: You can watch this film or you can swallow three cups of sugar. The end result will be the same. This film is soooooo sweet it borders on being dangerous for diabetics. I noticed during the opening credits that Jeff London was the director and screen writer and my mind did a mental Oh, oh. This is the third London film I have watched (... and Then Came Summer and The Last Year). He definitely has his own style. I suspect if I had not seen his name in the credits I would have guessed it was his. There are the long scenes of people talking. There is the piano music. But most of all there is the trying too hard to pull an emotional response out of the audience. The stories don't come naturally. They are forced, and their purpose is to make me feel the emotions the director wants me to feel. While I'm sure that's every director's goal, in London's case I can feel him pulling on my strings and saying, now is when you should cry. It's over the top. This film has only three characters: Billy, his best friend Dean, and Billy's younger brother Johnny. It opens with Dean and Billy on a camp out where both lack the courage to come out to the other and admit they're in love. Dean drops a bombshell, he's joined the military and will be leaving in two weeks. Fast forward a few years, Billy and Johnny's parents have died. Since Johnny is mentally challenged, Billy has return home to take care of him. That's when Dean shows up and asks to move in with the two brothers until he can adjust to post-military life. You, and everyone else, can see where this is headed. Most gay people have spent some time in the closet and we can all relate to that. But the reluctance both these men feel to opening the closet door and taking a peek outside stretches believability beyond its limits. And the fact all three men are sooooo sweet and there's little conflict in this film may have you rolling your eyes.
