Sin Destino (Without Destiny)

Year: 2002
Country: Mexico
Director: Leopoldo Laborde
Starring: Francisco Rey, David Valdez, Roberto Cobo, Mariana Gaj, Sylvia Vilchis
Synopsis: A 15-year-old boy lives on the streets of Mexico City by selling his body to older men, then taking drugs to forget what he does for a living.
Quick review: We learn in the DVD extras to this movie that the director became inspired to make this film after he stumbled into a group of teens living in an abandoned building. He talked to them about their lives and became horrified when he learned that they sell their bodies to get the money to buy their food and drugs. It motivated him to make this film about child prostitution and child pornography. He wanted to pay homage to a 1950s Mexican classic, Los Olvidados. That film told the story of a group of street kids and Roberto Cobo played the key villian in the film. Cobo is back in this tale, and again he's the villian. Francisco is the boy at the center of this mostly black and white movie. He's a few weeks away from turning 16 and living in an abandoned building. To pay for food he has sex with men. To forget about the men and the horrors of his past, he needs cocaine. The chief horror from his past is Sebastian, a 60-something man who was the first to introduce Frank to prostitution. The boy was 9 years old at the time this older man offered him food in exchange for snapping some nude photos. Years after having escaped the clutches of that pedophile, Frank comes face to face with Sebastian again. Also thrown into this mix are storylines involving Frank's best friend and drug dealer, David; a cute blonde girl who lives in the building next to Frank's; and a female prostitute who is eager to help Frank learn if he's gay or straight by being the first woman he has sex with. The film takes on some dark turns near the end, much like the 1950s classic that inspired it. It also has some brief scenes of frontal nudity. This movie struggles to hide the fact that it is low budget. The acting can be over the top in places; the editing is down-right confusing; and one drug-induced scene stretches on so long I was reaching for the remote and trying to find the fast-forward button. And the love scenes between a 60ish man and the boy he molested are tough to sit through.
