Call to Witness

Synopsis: This documentary looks at the rising conflict within the U.S. Lutheran church over allowing gay men and women to serve as pastors.
Quick review: In the late 1990s a number of Lutheran churches in gay-friendly neighborhoods began a movement install openly gay pastors who were living in committed relationships. The church had a problem with that. Pam Walton began interviewing most of these gay and lesbian pastors and recounted their struggles to serve God while being true to who they are. The high point is following the case of Iowa pastor Steve Sabin as he is about to go to trial for announcing that he was gay and in a committed relationship after he had been ordained. As documentaries go, this one is even more low budget than you usually get. It isn't put together with the style of some of the other documentaries reviewed on this Web site. But for those who care passionately about the mix of religious service and being gay, it offers a good recap of those struggles in the late 1990s and foreshadows some of the battles that were to follow in the next decade.
