Where the Truth Lies

Year: 2005
Country: Canada
Director: Atom Egoyan
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth, Alison Lohman, Sonja Bennett, Rachel Blanchard
Synopsis: A female reporter sets out to learn why a famous comedy duo from the 1950s broke up and how a woman they both knew ended up dead in their hotel, despite their airtight alibis.
Quick review: It is the 1950s and the biggest comedy duo going is Vince Collins and Lanny Morris (played by Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth). They even host a telethon, which they are doing this weekend. After the telethon ends, where the entire country watched them for 39 straight hours on TV, they fly to New Jersey, doing a press conference and are then escorted up to their hotel room. The entire time they are surrounded by handlers, media and hotel staff. They are never alone. It is at that moment that the sexy young body of a woman is found in their New Jersey hotel. Both of the men had sex with her 48 hours ago. How did she die? How did her body turn up in their hotel room? And why did that discovery end the comedy team of Collins & Morris? It's 12 years after that event and reporter K. O'Connor (Alison Lohman) has signed a book deal to get the answers to those questions. The films jumps back and forth from events in the 1950s to the 1970s. And because this is a movie, the reporter leads the audience to discovering the truth of what happened. And because this Web site is Outfilms and dedicated to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender movies, you can probably make a good guess at some of the mystery. Bacon and Firth are both big stars and they do an excellent job playing characters at different ages. The makeup is excellent. But, this film is all about Lohman. Everything else is window dressing. This movie is based on a book by Rupert Holmes, who also wrote the screenplay.
