Garçon Stupide (Stupid Boy)

Year: 2004
Country: Switzerland
Director: Lionel Baier
Starring: Pierre Chatagny, Rui Pedro Alves, Natacha Koutchoumov
Synopsis: A young man cruises for sexual encounters on the Internet at night and spends time trying to find meaning in his life during the day.
Quick review: When the title says Loic is a stupid young man, they really mean it. He's not quite sure who Hitler was; he isn't quite sure about the concept of impressionism and the word angular gives him problems. Wondering how he dresses himself every day would not be out of place right now. Loic doesn't have any need for intelligence, because he's a hot, young gay man on the prowl. He spends his night online cruising for sex. He wastes no time with online flirtations, preferring to be blunt and quick about it. The film does show plenty of nudity, including full frontal. The sex scenes leave little room for imagination. But they don't dominate the film. Loic's search for purpose in his life is the overriding theme. To guide him are his two best friends, Marie and Lionel (who was a trick that never panned out). Lionel, who is off camera for most of the film, tries to convince Loic that there is more to being gay than just sex. That you can fall in love. Loic is skeptical. That is, until a local soccer player begins to catch his eye. His stalker-like behavior is more than a little disturbing to watch. I suspect many gay men will watch this film because of the cute lead and the promise of nudity, but they will likely be disappointed. It's a slow-moving film with long scenes of little-to-no dialogue. And the viewer never gets the emotional payback you want after investing the time to watch this story.
