Dracula's Daughter
Year:
1936
Country:
USA
Director:
Lambert Hillyer
Starring:
Gloria Holden, Otto Kruger
Synopsis:
Dracula is dead, but his daughter comes out of hiding in this 1936 sequel. She's hungry for a new life, and yes, a little blood.
Quick review:
Today this would not be considered a lesbian film, because the lesbianism is so subtle you could easily mistake it for someone admiring a hamburger they plan to devour. But in 1936 finding images of one woman admiring the beauty of another was difficult. They were able to get away with it in this case by making the predatory female a vampire, who wasn't so much interested in sex as in sucking out the blood of a pretty young thing. The film begins with the death of Dracula. His daughter, played by Gloria Holden, has arrived to confirm that her father is dead. It was a complicated relationship. She succeeds in giving her father a proper vampire send off, but she truly longs to be normal and hates the fact that she is a vampire as well. She hopes that maybe with her father's death, she will somehow be free of it. But vampires do not change their wings or fangs. She still hungers for blood and must feed. She succeeds in luring some men and women back to her place for a little seduction and a meal. For her. In her attempts to change from a vampire's life she meets a famous psychiatrist, Dr. Jeffrey Garth, who she hopes will be able to free her from being a vampire. The acting is over the top by modern standards and not in a fun way. An interesting side note on this film, it was originally to be the work of James Whale, the gay director who was the subject of '
Gods & Monsters.'
He wrote it so outrageous that they took him off the project and had others come in to fix the story. Too bad. I think I would have enjoyed the Whale version more.
