Hannah and her Brothers (Hana a Jej Bratia)

Year: 2000
Country: Slovakia
Director: Vladimír Adásek
Starring: Martin Keder, Marta Zuchov, Lucia Hurajov,Vladimír Adásek, Patrácia Jariabkov, Rudo Kratochvál
Synopsis: Teen-age Martin struggles with his sexual orientation and comparisons to a disgraced relative he's never met in this bizarre family drama.
Quick review: This is a strange film. Martin is a teen growing up in his family's home in the Slovak Republic. He has the fag hag best friend and suspects he's gay, but isn't quite comfortable wearing that label just yet. His family, filled with eccentric characters, says that Martin reminds them of Tony. Who is Tony? We don't get than information right away, but it's a good bet that Tony left the family after coming out. In between the comings and goings of Martin we meet Hannah, a drag singer at the local cabaret, and Theodora, an elderly neighbor who knows all of Martin's secrets (they involve vegetables and vaseline). As the film winds down it takes some unique twists, like most of the cast suddenly having their hair dyed red all at the same time. The best reason to see this movie is it is a rare gay film from Eastern Europe (that isn't porn). That makes it quite ground-breaking in that regard.
