Tropical Malady (Sud Pralad)

Synopsis: A love story between a soldier and a village teen turns to fantasy after the teen becomes a tiger that threatens the village livestock.
Quick review: This is a film like nothing you've seen before. Most American audiences will not like it, because it is so different. Weerasethakul makes a major departure from the traditional three-act screenplay with this slow-moving fantasy tale. Keng is a soldier who falls in love with a village boy, Tong. The love affair between the two men progesses at a pace snails would find boring, but if you watch it you do get the feeling they are gradually falling in love. There is very little action, or even kisses for that matter, so many gay audiences will be disappointed there is no payoff after investing so much time in rooting for the two men to get together. Halfway through the film it changes. The romance is gone because Tong has suddenly turned into a giant tiger, who haunts the village. Keng sets out to hunt him down. If you thought the first half of the film was slow moving, you ain't seen nothing yet. The movie drags out as Keng hunts his man, er, tiger. But what will he do with the tiger if he finds him? There are elements to this film that are excellent with great scenes of beauty. But this movie is a bit more of a challenge that I suspect many audiences are willing to sit through.
