Say Uncle

Year: 2005
Country: USA
Director: Peter Paige
Starring: Peter Paige, Kathy Najimy, Gabrielle Union, Anthony Clark, Lisa Edelstein
Synopsis: This first film by writer/director/star Peter Paige -- of Queer as Folk fame -- explores the story of society's fears of gay men and pedophilia.
Quick review: Paul is an innocent man who is more like a child than an adult, despite his 30 or so years on this planet. He relates better to children than he does adults. His best gal pal recognizes this and made Paul the godfather of her son. Trouble begins when the mom and godson move to Japan, leaving Paul with a giant hole in his life. To fill it, he begins to seek a job that will keep him in constant contact with children and he spends his free time hanging out at the neighborhood playground, playing with children. When the other parents learn that Paul has no child of his own and that he is gay, they begin to wonder about his motivations. Led by one mom, Maggie (Kathy Najimy), a neighborhood group forms to protect their children from Paul, who they now assume is a pedophile waiting to happen. If you're a gay man watching this film, Paul will piss you off. He's so clueless as he walks through life that he doesn't realize how his attention to children might be misinterpreted. And, if you have ever cared for any child, it's not hard to put yourself in the shoes of Maggie and the other emotional mothers, who don't need much proof in the name of protecting their children. This is a thought-provoking film that leaves the audience feeling uncomfortable. Considering the subject matter, maybe that's not a bad thing.
