Quick review:
The hit of the 2004 Reel Affirmations film festival was an African-American drama,
Brother to Brother
. Following in its footsteps is this murder mystery that was inspired by Billie Holiday's anti-lynching song 'Strange Fruit.' William, a New York lawyer, returns to his childhood home in the Louisiana bayou after his gay cousin, Kelvin, was murdered in a hate crime. The local police show no interested in pursuing the case, so it s up to William to find out who did it. But that is not the only reason for this trip, because it s William s first trip home since his mother threw him out of her life when he told her he was gay. He aches for a reconciliation, but it appears his mother has no interest in her son s life, no matter how successful he has become. The movie offers some hot black men and it s nice to see a story more focused on the murder mystery than the sexual orientation of the characters. Still, some of the characters, namely the local police chief, seem too cardboard to be real and the twist of an ending was a disappointment. There's a market out there for quality films involving gay black characters. We're just beginning to scratch the surface.
