Love to Hide, A (Un Amour A'taire)

Synopsis: A gay couple living in Nazi-controlled France try to keep their love affair secret not only from German officials, but also from their families.
Quick review: There have been a few gay films that have touched on the Holocaust and the Nazi persecution of gays, but most of the better ones have been lesbian films, including  Aimee & Jaguar and  November Moon. This film aims to tell the story without the preaching you get in Bent. Jean (Jérémie Renier) is a gay French man who works for his parents by day, and spends his night with his secret boyfriend. The relationship becomes more complicated when a childhood friend, a Jewish girl (Louise Monot), shows up and needs to be hidden. Add to that the sibling rivalry of a younger brother and living in Nazi-controlled France and there is plenty of drama. Eventually, Jean is arrested and sent off to one of the Nazi re-education camps where they intend to make a straight man out of him. The images from the concentration camps are chilling and parents may want to think twice about bringing young children. There are a number of murders, including one so graphic and disturbing it will have many adults in the audience flinching. This is a strong story about a troubled time in history with complex characters and different shades of love, betrayal and hate. This film was voted the best of the 2005 Reel Affirmations gay and lesbian film festival by the audience.
