Loggerheads

Year: 2005
Country: USA
Director: Francoise Bourdin
Starring: Bonnie Hunt, Chris Sarandon, Kip Pardue, Michael Kelly, Michael Learned, Tess Harper
Synopsis: An HIV positive drifter shows up on a North Carolina beach in search of loggerhead turtles and finds love with the owner of a local motel.
Quick review: This slow-moving, subtle story was quite a surprise at Reel Affirmations 2005, the D.C. gay film festival. It is three inter-connected stories that paint a picture of a young man's life. The dreamy Kip Pardue stars as the HIV-positive drifter who shows up on a beach in search of turtles. His love affair with a motel owner is one of the three stories; a second involves the adoptive parents of the drifter, who are still not over the fact that they have a gay son; and the final storyline involves the mother of the drifter, who was forced to give up her son by her overprotective mother. There is the potential with that setup for a lot of preaching, but this is a subtle film. The viewer is told at the start that this film was based on a true story, one that never made headlines. It shows the power of the everyday drama of ordinary people's lives.
