Adam & Steve
Year:
2005
Country:
USA
Director:
Craig Chester
Starring:
Chris Kattan, Craig Chester, Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey
Synopsis:
Two men meet and fall in love when they're both in their early 20s, but the one night of true love goes horribly wrong. They meet again 18 years later and don't recognize each other. But it's still true love.
Quick review:
Craig Chester is an openly gay actor who has had some small, but memorable roles. The biggest I can think of is the sidekick in the movie '
Kiss Me, Guido
'. He has since written a couple of books, including
'Adam & Steve.'
So naturally he's adapted it for the screen and plays one of the characters in his directing debut. Chester plays Adam, who's just out of the closet and heavily into Goth when he's dragged to a club by his best friend/fag hag Rhonda. While at the club he falls for the go-go boy, Steve. The attraction goes both ways and it's not long before the two are back at Adam's place, where Steve introduces Adam to his first hit of cocaine. Then things go bad. Real bad. I don't want to ruin the scene, but it goes so bad that despite their attraction, the two men hope never to see each other again because it would be too painful to relive that night. Fast forward 18 years and neither man has found true love. Adam is now getting over a drug habit and Steve has given up his dream of being a dancer and become a doctor. The two men meet again, but do not recognize each other. It's doesn't take long before they fall in love again. There's a lot of antics before we get to the plot twist that you know is coming, they finally recall that night and each other. Steve has a deadbeat straight roommate, played by Saturday Night Live's Chris Kattan, who chases after the much slimmer fag hag, Rhonda. And then both men meet the families of the other. This is a feel-good romantic comedy, but it does not rise above its genre. It's a good date night film.
