Crocodile Tears

1998
Country:
USA
Director:
Ann Coppell
Starring:
Ted Sod, Dan Savage, Joanne L Klein, William Salyers, Wade Madsen, Brian O'Hare
Synopsis:
Simon discovers that he's HIV positive and decides to take drastic action to save himself, including offering to sell his soul to the devil for a second chance.
Quick review:
This is one of those art films that tries way too hard to be an 'art film.' Simon is a gay performance artist who receives a jolt when a close friend with HIV commits suicide. He soon learns that he too is HIV positive, and fears that his life is over. He offers to sell his eternal soul to Satan if only he can be HIV negative again. Satan agrees, through an agent he sends to deal with Simon. But, before Simon can rid his body of the disease he must perform three tasks. The first, is to become a stand-up comedian who is known for his homophobic jokes. The other two tasks also require a great sacrifice as Simon leaves behind the person he was to become someone he once hated. The movie gets preachy at time and it's uncomfortable, to say the least, when you have to sit through the anti-gay jokes, racist, sexist jokes. And you're sitting there thinking that this film is from 1998, when HIV wasn't as severe a disease as it was 10 years earlier. So, you really have to question why Simon is will to give up everything.
