Simon, El Gran Varon
Year:
2002
Country:
Mexico
Director:
Miguel Barreda
Starring:
Víctor Carpinteiro, Alicia Encinas, Alberto Estrella, Hugo Stiglitz
Synopsis:
A Mexican rancher tries to make a man out of his only son, who likes to dress up in his mother's clothes.
Quick review:
This movie has more of a feel of a Mexican soap opera than a feature film. Simon is the only son of a tough Mexican rancher, Don Andres. Since the son must inherit the ranch it is the father's duty to toughen Simon up and prepare him for that day. That's a big chore because Simon would rather play with dolls and dress up in his sister's clothes than to be outside learning how to be a rancher. Don Andres comes off as quite cruel in this film, filled with melodrama. Finally, he drives Simon away from the family and to the big city, where the boy discovers a life he is much more suited for. That's when dad makes an appearance and some family secrets are revealed. I didn't care for the way Simon was portrayed. Not all gay men grow up playing with dolls and dressing in women's clothes. Don Andres is so over the top cruel it takes any enjoyment out of watching the film. And the gay seduction scene at the end is disappointing. A straight guy decides to go gay for a night because his girlfriend has cheated on him and he needs comfort? Huh? There are better gay movies worthy of your time.
