Alley Cats, The
Year:
1966
Country:
France
Director:
Radley Metzger
Starring:
Anne Arthur, Sabrina Koch, Karin Field, Charlie Hickman, and Harald Baerow
Synopsis:
A young woman feels neglected by her cheating fiance and sets out for some romantic encounters of her own, including giving in to the advances of a lesbian.
Quick review:
Another of Radley Metzger's swinging '60s movies that throws in a lesbian love twist strictly for straight male fantasies. Leslie is a bored American in Europe, sitting around waiting on her fiance Logan to give her some attention. Logan, however, is more interested in spending time with Leslie's close friend Agnes. All that begins to change when Leslie decides she needs a little adventure of her own and finds two willing people to court her at a party. The first is Christian, who has the looks and a reputation for breaking hearts all across Europe. The second is from Irena, who is not too subtle with her desires toward Leslie. This film is a typical male fantasy film. Logan wants the pristine fiance who sits around waiting on him while he gets nasty with other women. The second he finds out his fiance isn't waiting patiently for him, he becomes angry. And when he learns she's being unfaithful with a woman, the anger intensifies. There's some violence in the film and outside of the lesbian love scene, there's not much to recommend this film for GLBT audiences. It's mostly noteworthy for its place in history, showing a love scene between two women three years before the Stonewall riots.
