Saving Face

Year: 2004
Country: USA
Director: Alice Wu
Starring: Michelle Krusiec, Joan Chen, Jessica Hecht
Synopsis: The patriarch of a Chinese family living in New York has to deal with two face saving events: His unmarried daughter is pregnant and his granddaughter is a lesbian.
Quick review: This is a fun, enjoyable romantic comedy and a must see for any gay movie fan. It's a great first-time effort by director and screenwriter Alice Wu and I look forward to her next film. Wilhemina is the ideal young Chinese woman, living in America. She is a successful surgeon with a bright future and a credit to her mother and grandparents. The only problem is she's not married. But the family is working on changing that. What they don't know, is that Wil is a lesbian and very interested in her boss's daughter, Viv. But keeping that a secret will be difficult, because Wil's mother has been tossed out of her father's home because she is pregnant, and unmarried since Wil's father died. The dual storylines play well together and the culture clash of Chinese values with American diversity makes for a very entertaining experience. The movie slips into some movie cliches near the end -- running to the airport to tell someone you love them, begging them not to go -- but that's easy to forgive in a first-time effort.
