Thousand Clouds of Peace, A

Year: 2003
Country: Mexico
Director: Julián Hernández
Starring: Juan Carlos Ortuño, Juan Carlos Torres, Perla de la Rosa
Synopsis: A Mexican teen deals with the emotional wreck of falling in love for the first time, only to have his heart broken.
Quick review: This is not an easy movie to watch, because it demands that you keep your brain engaged, something Hollywood gave up on years ago. Gerardo is a lonely young man moving from one meaningless gay encounter to another. He meets Bruno in a pool hall and the chemistry is right and he falls in love. But the affair with Bruno is very brief and we must watch Gerardo suffer. For those who have sat for hours by a phone willing it to ring; or paced for long stretches of time at a place where you hope to 'bump' into your lover you will recognize Gerardo's pain. But, sitting through those long moments is not something you get from your average film. There will be some, if not many, who lose patience and get bored with this film very early. The key plot device in this film is a love letter that Gerardo clings to, believing every word is from Bruno to him. Every man he meets reminds him of Bruno, but the illusion is soon gone. There is full-frontal nudity in this black-and-white film and a few mild sex scenes that show very little. This film is more about the emotions it brings out in the viewer than in trying to enterain its audience. Some who give it careful study and dive into those emotions will find it rewarding. Others will lose patience with it early and find it slightly on the wrong side of boring because not a lot happens.
