Fellini Satyricon
Year:
1969
Country:
Italy
Director:
Federico Fellini
Starring:
Martin Potter, Capucine, Hiram Keller, Salvo Randone
Synopsis:
This hard-to-describe movie is a series of adventures for two gay men set in the ancient days where being gay was not an issue people gave much thought to. For it's time, it was ground-breaking.
Quick review:
Before viewing this classic, try and transport your expectations back to 1969. If you view it with modern sensibilities, you're not going to be too happy with the result. But in 1969 most gay films had the homosexual killing himself at the end of the movie and everyone looked down at him or her. They were often the villian. And if not that, then the jester. But even recalling that this movie is not an easy one to watch. Encolpio and Ascilto are students, friends and rivals in the first century near Rome. They both yearn for the love of a cute young slave called Gitone. During the rest of the film we move, not always smoothly, from one scene to another following the adventures of the two rivals. There is a great deal of gay desire taking place, and even some creepy references to man-boy love. The film is loosely based on the book Satyricon by Gaius Petronius Arbiter, which only exists today in bits and pieces. That might explain why it jumps around so much and why it is difficult to follow. If you go into it accepting the limited role gays had on screen at this time in history; and that this film really doesn't have one central plot you can follow and that there will be huge chunks of the story missing; it's interesting to watch. But, boy-oh-boy are those mighty big ifs.
